An old dog with not many new tricks
Mercedes have revealed the first official image of the newly face lifted SL, the new SL has only been slightly tweaked since the previous model, the new SL was designed to bring the car more in line with Mercedes’ current line up. As you can see the SL is essentially just a convertible version of the brilliant AMG GT, although I guarantee we will see an official convertible AMG GT sooner rather than later.
It’s up against some tough competition
The SL has been languishing in the Mercedes line up for a while now, ever since the release of the fantastic looking SLS the old SL has sort of been left by the wayside, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Mercedes eventually dropped the SL entirely in favour of the much more popular AMG GT. The SL appears to still be the moderately fast cruiser for the older gentleman to drive around in, but it is by no means a sports car.
Not really anything new
The engines in the new SL are likely to remain the same, a 3.0 litre V6, a 4.6 litre V8 and a 6.0 litre V12. If the SL is to truly be supported by Mercedes they should put the 4.0 litre twin turbo V8 from the AMG GT into the SL AMG, however it is more likely that we will see the same old 5.5 litre V8, which I always found was a rather unimpressive engine.
Time for something new
Whilst this is an update for the old girl it still feels as if the SL is to be forgotten by Mercedes in favour of newer faster models. Sadly it is unlikely we will ever see a new SL Black or even a normal special edition for the SL. Maybe it truly is time for Mercedes to put the old girl out to pasture and move on to newer, better things.
