One can’t expect to be able to drive safely with tires that are meant for summer when you have winter conditions. All-season tires are not designed for all the seasons that are warm and don’t have winter conditions. When you have these conditions you will need to have an all-weather tire or then a dedicated winter tire that you will change to before the cold season starts. Timing of the tire change is very important as you want to make sure that you have the winter tires on your car before any snowstorm hits or that you have cold weathers.

You still don’t want to drive with your winter tires all year round, as the rubber compound used is optimized for cold temperatures and the rubber will become too soft at summer temperatures. It is not dangerous to drive with winter tires, when it comes to having good grip, but they will wear too fast due to high heat build up. They will also make your car to consumer more fuel due to increased rolling resistance. However, when it comes to your safety, it is still important to mount them a few weeks before a dip in temperature might arrive so that you will be safe and ready when the cold weather hits.

Once you have changed to your tires, it is important to make sure that you maintain the tires properly. Check the tread depth, condition and the tire pressure. If you are not sure how to use a tire pressure gauge, check online for directions to make sure you get it right. If the pressure is too low, it will lower the performance, increase the tire wear and the fuel consumption of your car. The tire pressure varies with temperature, so a big drop in temperature means that it is worth checking the tire pressure upon your next stop at the gas station. You will find the recommended tire pressure in the owner’s manual.
