Mercedes are getting into the Hybrid hyper car game
Mercedes are set to unveil their newest top end hyper car on the 11th of September at the Frankfurt Motor show. The Mercedes AMG concept, currently called the Project One, is set to be the debut of the Mercedes Formula One teams Hybrid technology in a road car. Like the McLaren P1 and Porsche 918 the Project One is expected to use a plug in hybrid system rather than the KERS system seen in the Ferrari La Ferrari. The Mercedes AMG Project One is said to have over 1000BHP and a top speed in excess of 218MPH. Mercedes say that the Project One, “combines outstanding racetrack performance with day-to-day suitable Formula 1 hybrid technology and exemplary efficiency.”
Like the Porsche 918 the Mercedes Project One is 4 Wheel drive
The Project One will feature a new 4WD system thanks to two electric motors in the front wheels, which will provide 322BHP to the front wheels. The Formula one derived engine will team with an eight speed automatic gearbox sending power to the rear. The highly exclusive hyper car is expected to cost upwards of £2.4million, dwarfing its competition from Porsche, McLaren and Ferrari.
You won’t need to be a racing driver to drive one
The Project One takes its engine from Mercedes current Formula One car driven by Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas. But don’t worry, Mercedes are sure you won’t need to be a racing driver to drive the Project One.
Speaking to Autocar, Mercedes AMG Chairman, Tobias Moers said: “Because of the F1-derived technology used by the new car, prospective buyers have been asking if they will require a support crew or dedicated lubricants to run it. My answer is always no. It will be a street car. You keep it plugged in in the garage. You fill it with fuel. That’s it.”
Mercedes has an impressive history in super cars
Mercedes previous forays into the world of hardcore hyper cars include the insane CLK GTR and their joint project with McLaren, the SLR. Mercedes have also been responsible for all of the Pagani engines used in both the Zonda and the Huayra, and are now supplying Aston Martin with engines for the DB11 and the new Vantage replacement.
