The flurry of new or updated models from Audi is still ongoing. The popular Q5 began life in 2008 and has since become one of the most popular premium SUVs. The new third-generation brings powertrains, looks and technology recently revealed in other new Audis, but the new Q5 will bring it all together in a package that is sure to be popular.
A Familiar, Sporty Face
Audi’s styling is becoming progressively less laid-back, with cars like the new A5 and Q6 e-tron bringing sportier, more modern designs. The new Q5 is no different. The Spaceframe grille and thin, menacing lights give it a sharp look when combined with the air intakes. There’s nothing to write home about at the side, but the rear features the textbook Audi lightbar and sleek look. The rear contrasts the upper half of the rear, sitting just above the tailpipes.
Wheels vary from 19 to 21 inches in size and the S line and S model gets more pronounced front air intakes. The Edition 1 model benefits from the stealthy black exterior package.
The design also benefits the aerodynamics of the Q5. Air curtains channel the airflow around the front wheels and side, and aero panels and the rear spoiler separate air cleanly.
Premium Materials and Plenty of Technology
The new Audi Q5’s cabin is designed to focus on the needs of occupants. And if the driver and passenger crave technology, the Q5 is perfect. There’s an 11.9-inch virtual cockpit and a 14.5-inch MMI touchscreen, with the option of a 10.9-inch passenger display with Active Privacy Mode and a head-up display.
A voice assistant with AI integration features, while apps such as Spotify and YouTube can be downloaded into the MMI. A Bang & Olufsen Premium Sound System is standard on the SQ5 Edition 1 and available as an option on other models.
Premium materials are used throughout, with a soft wrap running across the dashboard and fabric panels being used on the armrest and door. Control areas are finished in a shiny gloss black. The S line uses the sustainable materials Cascade and Dinamica, which use recycled polyester.
Pick Your Poison
While the new Q5 is only available with a mild hybrid, there are three powertrains to choose from. A 2.0-litre engine in either petrol or diesel is available, both with 201hp – although the diesel has an extra 60Nm of torque, at 400Nm in total. Meanwhile, the SQ5 uses a 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 with 362hp and 550Nm of torque.
Balancing Handling and Comfort
The new Audi Q5 offers the neutral handling that the Ingolstadt manufacturer is known for. Stiffer suspension is promised, while the S line and Edition 1 can be optioned with sports suspension. Adaptive damper control is available in the air suspension setup on SQ5 Edition 1. Both the Q5 and SQ5 have enhanced progressive steering as standard.
Pricing and full specifications of the new Audi Q5 and SQ5 will be revealed when they go on sale in October, but expect the Q5 to start somewhere between £45,000 and £50,000 and the SQ5 to be available from about £70,000.
