The Q5 is a big seller for Audi, thanks to its combination of space and luxury. The Q5 Sportback, its slightly less practical counterpart, is aimed more at those more attracted by looks. Just like the new Q5, it arrives with three mild hybrid powertrains boosting efficiency and performance. The second-generation Audi Q5 Sportback starts at £52,450 (£2,500 more than the standard Q5), while the SQ5 Sportback Edition 1 is available from £76,900. It officially goes on sale in the UK in January, with deliveries set to commence in May 2025.
Slick Styling Combined With Practicality
While the Q5 Sportback is not as spacious as the less svelte model, boot space is only 5 litres less than that of the standard SUV. 515 litres should be plenty for a family, rising to 1,415 litres with the rear seats folded down.
The new design is more distinctive and dynamic than before, thanks to the Singleframe grille. Air intakes and the properly thin lights help to create an angry Audi face. The body lines enhance the fluid design, while the sloped roofline stretches into the flat rear window. The rear is divided, with the lower half adding a more aggressive look to the overall design.
The sportier models have larger intakes at the front and a more prominent rear diffuser, with darker trim.
Packed With Technology and Premium Materials
Contrasting materials highlight certain sections throughout the interior of the Audi Q5 Sportback. The Softwrap extends from the doors to the centre console, which houses an 11.9-inch virtual cockpit and a 14.5-inch MMI touchscreen. An MMI passenger display is standard on Edition 1. Sustainable materials are also an option.
All-in on Mild Hybrids
There are three choices for the powertrain of the Q5 Sportback, all of which utilise 48-volt MHEV plus technology. It reduces the carbon footprint, while it allows for all-electric manoeuvring and parking. It also generates up to 230Nm of additional torque and 24bhp, while, usefully, it allows the air conditioning to stay on when the engine is turned off. Plug-in hybrids are set to follow later on in the Q5 lifecycle.
The Q5 Sportback is available with a 201bhp petrol or diesel engine, with 340Nm and 400Nm of torque respectively. Meanwhile, the SQ5 Sportback is powered by a 3.0-litre V6 with 362bhp and 550Nm of torque. All three engines are paired with the S tronic seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and use quattro all-wheel drive.
