Especially these engines that were produced in really big numbers and included in most of Ford’s pickup and SUV lineup. But you shouldn’t worry because, in this article, we are going to cover all you need to know about this problem.

Now let’s first introduce ourselves to the topic and learn more about what is the 5.4 engine in general before we cover some more complex topics like the specs, and also the problems with Ford 5.4 engine.
What is worth noting first is that the Ford 5.4L engine is part of a family of overhead camshaft engines known as the Modular engine. This is a family of small block engines developed by Ford in the early 90s in order to replace the aging designs from the 60s and 70s with something newer and more capable.
The engine was first introduced in 1991 and was produced until recently. In the modular family of engines, there were a couple of variations. There were the 4.6L, 5.0L, 5.2L, 5.4L, and 5.8L V8 engines.
As well as the 6.8L V10 engine (for more insight, check out our guide on the Ford V10 engine replacement cost). All the truck engines from the Modular family of engines are known simply as Triton. So, if you hear about the 5.4L Triton, you know that this is the engine that we are talking about.
Nevertheless, what is important to note about these engines is that they were the first overhead camshaft engines by Ford. So, these engines implement two camshafts. One per each bank instead of running the camshaft in the center like the old-school pushrod designs that we all know and love.
And honestly, these engines were actually good. A good starting point for what we know as the 5.0L Coyote. The modern Coyote is still a Modular engine but a heavily upgraded version to fit modern standards with variable valve timing, double overhead camshafts (DOHC vs simpler SOHC designs), and 4 valves per cylinder.
But we are here to talk about the 5.4 engine and the problems with Ford 5.4 engine. And more on that, in the next chapters.
Ford 5.4 Engine Applications
So, we learned more about what is the Modular engine and that the 5.4L engine is a part of this family of modular engines. Now before we learn more about the problems with Ford 5.4 engine, let’s learn more about the applications of this engine and see in which models this engine found its way.
There are three variations of this engine. A 2-valve, 3-valve engine, and 4-valve. And these three engines are somewhat different. The 2-valve does not have variable valve timing, while the 3-valve has variable valve timing.
The 2-valve engine debuted in 2002 and was produced until 2004 for most of the applications. It was included in the following applications. Ford F-Series, Ford SVT Lightning, Ford F-150 Harley Davidson Edition, Ford Expedition, Lincoln Navigator, and Ford E-Series between 1997 to 2017.
The 3-valve on the other hand was introduced in 2002 and featured variable valve timing and a lot of other improvements. But most importantly, these engines created a lot more power.
The applications of these engines were predominantly heavy-duty use. Namely, the Ford F-Series, Ford Expedition, Lincoln Navigator, and Lincoln Mark LT. This was between the years 2002 and 2010. And if you’re keen, we’ve also looked at the 2010 Ford F150 with the 5.4 engine.
The 4-valve on the other hand was the most potent version of this engine introduced in 2000 for the Ford Mustang SVT Cobra R and the Ford GT. This was a double overhead camshaft engine that created a ton of power.
In the following years, the model was included in the Lincoln Blackwood, Lincoln Navigator, and Shelby GT500. What is worth noting is that this engine was not used for truck use. Since it was a more performance-oriented engine. But what about the problems with Ford 5.4 engine? More about that, next.
Ford 5.4 Engine Diagram
Now let’s learn something more about the 5.4 engine diagram. What is worth noting is that we do not have real diagrams of this engine.
But one thing that we can show you is how this engine is torn down in bits. And knowing how this engine is torn down is a much more useful piece of data that you can find compared to regular diagrams.
In the video that we attached above, you can see a video from a really popular YouTube channel that only deals with tearing down engines. And in this video, the guy disassembles a 3-valve 5.4 Triton engine.
And these 3-valve engines are usually the most common ones that you will find out there if you are looking for a truck. So, you should definitely check out the video.
But we know that some of you are in a search of something more exotic like the 4-valve 5.4 engine that produces a ton of power. So, we decided to add another video where you can see how the 4-valve is disassembled.
It is quite similar to a modern 5.0L Coyote but with bigger displacement and also not as refined as the modern Coyote engine. Also, the 5.0 has its own issues, as discussed in our write-up on the Ford F150 5.0 engine problems. But what are the problems with Ford 5.4 engine? More about the problems, we are going to cover in a moment.
Ford 5.4 Engine Specs
Now let’s cover some of the specs of the 5.4 engine before we dive into the problems with Ford 5.4 engine. The 5.4L engine is an engine that comes in a V-configuration. When it comes to 5.4L to cubic inches, this is approximately about 330cu.
The engine has a total of 8 cylinders. And each of these cylinders has a bore of 90mm and a stroke of 106 mm. Take note that these units are in metric. And this longer stroke gives this engine the ability to be a proper workhorse.
Since a longer stroke always means that you have more low-end torque. This is why this is predominantly a truck engine. Nevertheless, this engine has a cast iron cylinder block for the 2-valve and 3-valve engines. While the cylinder heads are always cast aluminum in order to be lightweight.
The 2-valve and 3-valve engines implement a single overhead camshaft, while the 4-valve implements a double overhead camshaft. The 2-valve does not have any special treatment, so this means no variable valve timing. The VVT is only for the 3-valve and for the 4-valve engines.
The compression ratio of the 2-valve engine is 9.0:1, while the 3-valve engine has a compression ratio of 9.8:1.
In terms of power, this engine creates a different amount of 5.4 Triton hp varies anywhere between 235 hp and 550 hp. And the torque varies from 300lb-ft to 510lb-ft of torque. It really depends on whether the engine is a 2, 3, or 4-valve.
Ford 5.4 Triton Oil Capacity
Now before we dive into the problems with Ford 5.4 engine, let’s take a look a the type of oil this engine uses, as well as the oil capacity of this engine.
The engine oil used in this motor is the SAE 5W-20 engine oil and the capacity varies between 6 and 7 quarts. On the engines built between 1997 and 2003, the capacity is 6.0 quarts. While on the engines built after 2004, the capacity is 7.0 quarts.
Always make sure that you get quality oil in order to get the best out of your engine. Don’t go for the cheapest options out there. But what about the problems with Ford 5.4 engine? On the problems, we will discuss more in the next chapters.
Ford 5.4 Engine Problems
Now let’s move on to the problems with Ford 5.4 engine and learn more about what kind of problems you might face with this engine.
What is worth noting is that this is not a very problematic engine and overall, it is quite reliable. But it still has some issues here and there that might affect its reliability and cause some headaches to car owners. This is why you have to be aware of these issues on this engine which happen more frequently.
Now let’s dive into the problems with Ford 5.4 engine.
1. Spark Plug Blowout
The first and most common in our list of Ford 5.4 engine problems is the spark plug blowout. But what is a spark plug blowout in the first place?
Well, this is a situation when your spark plugs simply pop out from the engine from that enormous pressure inside of the cylinders. So, what could be causing this problem on your 5.4 engine?
Well, as most people assume, the poor treads on the cylinder head where the spark plugs bolt on are causing this problem.
The treads are poorly done and there is not a full thread. There are two or three treads for the spark plug to grip on and that’s it. And whenever there are not enough treads to hold the spark plug in place, you can expect the spark plug to pop out. Cylinder number 3 and 5 are most affected by this problem.
And the solution for this problem is to install new inserts into your cylinder heads and add new spark plug threads. There is a special kit that you can buy and then fix your Triton engine. 2. Intake Manifold Cracking And Leaking
The second in our list of problems with Ford 5.4 engine is the intake manifold cracking. So, what is an intake manifold?
Well, on these modular engines, Ford decided to bring a new approach and ditch the old heavy intake manifolds and replace them with plastic ones.
And as with every new technology, they started to break and cause air leaks. The engine needs to be sealed well and if there is unmetered air inside the intake manifold, this might confuse the MAF sensor and the PCM (powertrain control module).
Then this will trigger the PCM to dump more fuel and make your car run richer than normal. Which is something that you don’t really want to happen. Since the car will run really poorly and will basically struggle to keep up.
That’s why you need to replace this manifold and this can be somewhat costly because these components even though are plastic, they are not very cheap. Some people just glue them back together, which is also a good temporary alternative. Now let’s continue with the next problems with Ford 5.4 engine.
3. 5.4 Engine Spark Plug & Coil Failure Problem
The next on our list of problems with Ford 5.4 engine is the problem with the premature wear on the spark plugs and ignition coils.
This is a common issue, especially on the 2-valve engines which were basically one of the first engines that Ford made with modern electronic ignition.
The spark plugs can wear at a much faster pace compared to more modern engines. As well as the ignition coil can also be problematic.
And when you have a problem with the ignition coils and spark plugs, the most common symptoms are engine misfires, rough idle, and overall poor engine work. The engine might cough a little bit. These are some of the more common symptoms of a bad ignition coil and need to consider an ignition coil replacement cost.
It is important to address these problems sooner than later because you might end up damaging other components like the catalytic converters and O2 sensors. Because if the fuel ignition is not good, the rich or lean mixture can affect these components and damage them in the process.
Now let’s move on to the next problems with Ford 5.4 engine problems.
4. 5.4 Engine Fuel Pump Driver Module
The next on our list of problems with Ford 5.4 engine is the fuel pump driver module. But what is a fuel pump driver module?
This is an electronic module that basically connects your PCM with your fuel pump found in the rear. And basically helps your PCM to tell the fuel pump to deliver the desired fuel pressure based on the engine work.
Overall, there is nothing wrong with this component. The main issue is that this module is bolted on the steel frame. And since this is an aluminum part, when aluminum and steel come together and other impurities start to creep on like salt and water, the module will start to rust.
And even though the module is quite thick, this corrosion will basically eat up the whole component and when the water gets inside, it will destroy the module. This problem occurs in almost all of these F-150s from this era between 2004 and 2008.
And if the module is dead, the truck won’t start. The most commonly associated code with this problem is P1233. Which indicates a problem with the module. Now let’s move on to the other problems with Ford 5.4 engine.
5. 5.4 Engine Timing Chain Problems
Next on our list of problems with Ford 5.4 engine is the issue with the timing chain. As you probably know, this engine, unlike its predecessors is using an overhead camshaft layout. This means that the camshafts are located on top of each of the heads.
And there needs to be a connection between the camshafts and the crankshaft. And for this purpose, there is the timing chain. What happens is that sometimes these chains can stretch after many miles on the clock and also the tensioners that keep the tension can fail and cause the chain to rattle.
Rattling noises are the first clues when it comes to this problem. It is important that you act immediately whenever this problem happens. Because the chain can jump and the engine can get damaged inside since this type of engine is an interference engine, unlike the old-school pushrod engines that were non-interference engines.
So, be aware of these problems with Ford 5.4 engine. Now let’s move on to the last problem.
6. 5.4 Engine Oil Pan Gasket Leaks

It is a truck engine and is built to be tough. Especially the 2-valve and 3-valve engines are really strong and can basically work forever. There are no major concerns about it except for the problems that we listed.
The problem with the timing chain is probably the most serious issue that you can experience and if the chain rattles, you have to replace it. Since if you leave it like that, it could destroy the engine and you will have to pay thousands of dollars for a new 5.4 Triton crate motor.

On average, this engine lasts for 250,000 miles. There are some of these engines far above 300,000 miles. This is why if the engine is in the low 100,000s, it shouldn’t scare you.
But if there are more than 200,000 miles on the clock, you should do a compression test, just for a good measure to make sure that the engine is good.

The trucks made before 2004 are 2-valve and the ones that are made after 2004 are 3-valve. Also, by the air cleaner housing there is a decal that says 2v or 4v. Or you can decode the VIN and do a check this way.

The 2 valve is the lowest powered 5.4. This engine makes between 235hp and 340hp depending on the application. The 3-valve engine makes between 300hp and 320hp depending on the application.
