The All-New Nissan Micra EV Is Back With Electrifying Vengeance

At long last, the adorable Nissan Micra lives once more, but now with an electrifying twist, and it even has a French connection! The brand-new, 6th-generation Nissan Micra will soon return to showrooms near you in late 2025, but this time around, as a fully-electric B-segment hatch, with up to 253 miles of range, and a retro-inspired styling that definitely catches a few glances. That said, if you look at the new Micra EV long enough, you might notice a bit of déjà vu, which makes a lot of sense when you consider the fact that it shares a platform with the Renault 5!

Granted, that’s no bad thing, as the new Renault 5 EV is undoubtedly one of the best and most capable new electric cars that money can buy, and it looks especially handsome, too. Sharing a bloodline with it means that the new Nissan Micra EV has a familiar silhouette, but don’t think for a second that it’s merely a simple rebadge, as Nissan has spent quite a lot of time creating a distinct style that harks back to the old Micras. From those large 18-inch wheels to the SUV-like stance, as well as its unique lighting signature, the new Micra is in a league of its own.

From Paris With Love, And Renault, Too!

Those round headlights and taillamps, which are inspired by past Micras of yesteryear, are no doubt my personal favourite bit of the new Micra EV’s design, but it’s honestly hard to pick, as I’m already a huge fan of it, from every angle. Now, if we peel away all that steel, you will find Renault’s AmpR EV platform underneath, which has a lot more sporting credentials than it may appear on the surface! This includes a low centre of gravity, alongside independent front struts and a multi-link rear suspension to try and offer you the best-in-class ride quality and handling.

It’s also quite a lightweight construction, too, particularly by EV standards, which ought to help improve efficiency, agility, and steering response in abundance. Depending on the specific trim level and battery size you pick, the new Nissan Micra EV weighs as little as 1,400 kg, though at its most, the bigger battery pushes that kerb weight up to at least 1,524 kg! With that in mind, you could choose between two battery options on the new Micra: either a 40 kWh or a 52 kWh battery pack, which gets you either 192 miles or 253 miles of range (WLTP), respectively.

A Small But Mighty Little Electric Hatch

Your choice of battery also determines how much power you get, with the former offering you 90 kW of power and 225 Nm of torque, while the latter nets you 110 kW of power and 245 Nm of torque. Thankfully, both batteries come with fast-charging, so you’re able to enjoy peak fast-charging rates via DC power at 100 kW (or 80 kW with the 40 kWh battery), thus allowing you to top up either battery from 15% to 80% in just around 30 minutes. Neatly, the new Micra EV comes as standard with a heat pump, which is awesome for those of us in chillier climates.

Additionally, you even get vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality, enabling you to power or charge external electronics and electrical devices, using your Micra EV’s battery. Speaking of, the new Nissan Micra EV, despite being marketed as a more affordable electric vehicle, comes with a pretty generous amount of tech. Nissan’s super-clever ProPILOT Assist suite of ADAS systems makes a welcomed appearance on the new Micra EV, bringing with it lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and even more besides.

Practical & Capable, With A Cute Face

For an attainable EV, it’s also nice to see blind-spot monitoring, rear-cross traffic alerts, and a 360-degree camera being included, too! For greater ease while you’re driving, this new Micra EV carries over some handy features from other Nissan EVs and hybrids, such as their e-Pedal one-pedal driving mode for effortless driving, as well as Nissan’s superb regenerative braking system and its integration using paddle shifters on the wheel. Next up, stepping inside the all-new Micra EV opens up a sea of tech, practicality, and well-thought-out design.

You get two gigantic screens, 10.1 inches each, for your infotainment and instrument cluster, and it features Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, as well as the NissanConnect system with Google services built in. The cabin is rather nice too, offering you spacious seating, despite how small the Micra EV might appear from the outside, and a cavernous boot that expands up to 1,106 litres if you fold down the rear seats! Best of all, I love that the new Nissan Micra EV features hidden nods to their Japanese heritage, like a motif of Mount Fuji on the centre console.
