Despite the increasing presence of electric vehicles (EVs) on UK roads and ambitious government targets for cleaner transport, a substantial segment of motorists remains unconvinced. Bridgestone’s latest research has thrown a spotlight on a growing uncertainty: 40% of UK drivers are still on the fence about switching to an EV, an alarming rise from 27% just last year.
The Numbers: Encouragement Meets Resistance
Out of the 2,000 drivers surveyed, only 53% plan to buy an EV within the next five years. A firm 27% have ruled out ever owning one, up from 22% just three years ago. That signals a marked shift in sentiment, and not necessarily in the right direction.
Charging and Cost: The Twin Barriers
When it comes to resistance, two recurring themes dominate: infrastructure and cost. Over 62% of respondents are concerned about charging availability, while 59% cite the steep upfront price tag of EVs as a dealbreaker. Although range anxiety has somewhat diminished, with 48% still wary, the perceived inconvenience and financial burden are clearly sticking points.
Interestingly, while access to chargers has slightly improved, down from 68% last year, it’s still a major hurdle in the minds of many potential buyers.
Bridgestone’s Response: Simplifying the EV Journey
Bridgestone’s Drew Chapman, Director of Consumer Sales for the UK and Ireland, acknowledged the friction: “The appetite for EVs is clear, but the confidence to switch isn’t quite there.” In response, Bridgestone is positioning itself as a key enabler in the EV transition, offering products that aim to reduce complexity.
At the heart of this is the Turanza 6 ENLITEN tyre. Dubbed “EV Ready,” this all-round performer promises to deliver regardless of drivetrain, petrol, diesel, hybrid, or full electric. With top-tier wet performance, impressive mileage, and better energy efficiency, it’s engineered to tackle EV-specific demands such as increased weight and torque, without compromising on traditional performance expectations.
Bridgestone’s Tech-Driven Edge
The ENLITEN technology underpinning the Turanza 6 speaks to a broader mission. It ensures lower rolling resistance (essential for EV range), enhanced grip, and better wear tolerance, key concerns for EV drivers. It’s a move aligned with Bridgestone’s wider sustainability goals, including their E8 Commitment focused on advancing ecological solutions.
The Bigger Picture for Motorists
For UK drivers still unsure about making the EV leap, the message is clear: there’s still work to be done. Infrastructure needs to expand, cost barriers must be addressed, and confidence must be built through education and real-world support. Bridgestone’s efforts reflect a growing understanding that the EV transition isn’t just about vehicles, it’s about the ecosystem around them.
