While many manufacturers scramble to reinvent themselves as a premium electric brand, MG is unashamedly on the affordable end. However, this doesn’t mean MG isn’t electrifying its range – although there seems to be a hybrid stepping stone in place at the moment. The MG ZS Hybrid+ follows the MG ethos, bringing a hybrid powertrain for a very reasonable price.
If it Ain’t Broke, Don’t Fix It
The new MG ZS Hybrid+ has many of the motifs of other recent MGs, like the MG3 and HS. This includes the thin, aggressive headlights, joined by a black bar, above a large black grille. At the rear, the new ZS has a less distinctive design. It features LED lighting at the front and rear, automatic headlights, rain-sensing wipers, and keyless entry as standard.
Inside, there’s a 7-inch driver’s display and a 12.3-inch infotainment display, both carried over from other MG models. Rear parking sensors are standard and the camera will show on the central screen.
Upgrading to the Trophy model will add 18-inch ‘Sabre’ alloy wheels and rear privacy glass, while the biggest upsides can be found inside. Leather-style upholstery is included, as are heated front seats and steering wheel, a 6-way electrically-adjustable driver’s seat with lumbar support, and a 360° surround view camera.
More Efficiency, More Power, More Refinement
A hybrid powertrain replaces the petrol offerings of the previous ZS. A 100hp 1.5-litre petrol engine is combined with a 134hp electric motor to make a combined 193hp. More refinement is promised, while an improved 0-62mph time of 8.7 seconds is due to the new powertrain. Improved efficiency is another benefit, with an improved fuel economy of 55.4mpg.
Excellent Bang for Your Buck
MG Pilot, which features a whole host of safety features, is present for extra peace of mind, as is a 7-year warranty. The new MG ZS Hybrid+ is available to order now, with deliveries starting in October. The starts at £21,995, while the better-equipped Trophy is available from £24,495.
