As the winter frost melts away to give way to a beautiful spring, there’s no better time to go out and explore. It was the perfect time to take our campervan out for the first trip of 2025. So, with bags packed and luggage stowed away, my wife, Kim, and I recently took our converted VW Transporter campervan to the Abbey Wood Caravan and Motorhome Club site. We thought it’d be a pretty nice stop during our quick weekend away exploring London.
Book Your Next Club Campsite In A Breeze
We’ve heard that this particular Caravan and Motorhome Club site – Abbey Wood – is quite highly rated, so we were fairly keen to test it out. With amenities in abundance and beauty everywhere you look, I was particularly attracted to just how easily and quickly accessible London is from this Club campsite – more on that a bit later.
Booking any campsite via the Caravan and Motorhome Club’s website and mobile app is super straightforward. Plus, you get to make extensive use of the fact that the Caravan and Motorhome Club has the largest and most widespread network of caravan and motorhome campsites here in the UK, and even onwards into Europe. That allows you to pick between, as of writing, anyway, more than 2,300 campsites in the Caravan and Motorhome Club’s directory, in addition to over 150 of the more premium and exclusive Club campsites, such as their Abbey Wood location here.
Smooth Sailing And Effortless Check-Ins
Club sites get you electric hook-up and Wi-Fi. Of course, you could also pick and choose between a plethora of other cracking certified locations and affiliated campsites. No matter which campsite you pick, though, I’m definitely a fan of how easy it is to book a site, and that all starts with a low £5 deposit. On that note, the Caravan and Motorhome Club’s website and mobile app have loads of discounts, offers, and savings pretty much all the time on a vast number of sites across their network. So, be sure to make good use of these, alongside their membership goodies.
With the Abbey Wood Club site, in particular, your kids could even stay for as little as £1. I’d suggest that you go and check out their page here for more specifics, including what you get and could do here. Once we’re past the booking phase, upon arrival, the Caravan and Motorhome Club makes bold claims about their easy and smooth check-in process. When Kim and I arrived at Abbey Wood, we had a fantastic first impression, as we were greeted warmly at the reception by helpful, kind, and polite staff. In almost no time at all, they rapidly checked us in and provided us with everything we needed to know to properly enjoy our stay.
Excellent Pitch And On-Site Facilities
Now, it’s time to survey the grounds and see what exactly it is that we’d booked, which, pleasantly, looks like we are off to a great start. Our spacious hard-standing pitch (#58, specifically) came with electric hook-up and to make things even better, the water and waste disposal points were conveniently placed around 15 meters away. To add to that, despite how huge the Abbey Wood Club site is, facilities around the entire site were plentiful and within easy reach, no matter where you’re pitched.
We didn’t use the site’s laundry services, nor did we make good use of their CamperClean services during our stay but it’s nice to know that these amenities were readily available.
To supplement the gorgeousness of the grounds itself, there was the wildlife to keep you company, too! The wardens and the Abbey Wood staff mentioned that green parakeets and woodpeckers are often seen flying around the site. Alas, neither my wife nor I spotted or heard any ourselves. Better still, as a fan of felines myself, the Abbey Wood Club site also has a site cat, Murphy, who regularly roams the grounds to keep things in good order. Unfortunately, I seem to be down on my luck with animals, because this one also eluded us.
A Gorgeously Serene And Green Atmosphere
Abbey Wood is beautifully maintained, as are the other Club sites that the Caravan and Motorhome Club offers. For easy access, you can always find clearly marked paths and excellent evening-time lighting, making it really hard for most folks to get lost, even those with a poor sense of direction! Furthermore, while the Abbey Wood grounds do gently slope uphill, accessibility remains manageable for anyone out there with mobility concerns, given that the paths are smooth and well-kept. Overall, I doubt you would find any problems with making your way around, and it’s impressive that you can find a place like this within a fairly short drive from London city centre.
Despite Abbey Wood’s proximity to central London, the campsite felt otherworldly tranquil and relaxing. You’ll find yourself being surrounded by mature trees and greenery, and it truly feels like a countryside retreat rather than an urban campsite. Everywhere my wife and I went, the atmosphere in the air was friendly, with loads of international travellers and locals alike enjoying the calm environment. Aside from that, noise levels, given how busy it was when my wife and I went there, were notably quite low. That said, apart from the occasional cars starting up and moving about, Abbey Wood was an exceptionally and pleasantly peaceful and relaxing stay.
Lets not forget as well, on Saturday nights, the Abbey Wood site even hosts a pizza van on site to offer you a convenient, tasty evening meal.
Leaving Abbey Wood And Exploring London
Alright, it’s time to leave Abbey Wood behind for now and head for London! As I mentioned earlier, one of the best and standout benefits of staying at the Abbey Wood Caravan and Motorhome Club site is its close proximity and excellent access to London. Literally, a short and relaxed 10-minute walk will take you straight to the Abbey Wood station, where the brand-new Elizabeth Line will whisk you into central London. My wife and I stopped at Bond Street, a commute which only took around 30 minutes. From there, we’d find major attractions like Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, and the Houses of Parliament, all within very easy reach.
If there’s one thing I regret from our trip, is that we didn’t explore Abbey Wood’s local area more. Nevertheless, if you look around, Abbey Wood seems to have plenty to offer, from the many nearby shops, restaurants, and pubs. Additionally, the entire area is cyclist-friendly, giving you a great way to enjoy the greenness that surrounds the Abbey Wood Club site. Otherwise, if you’re not into cycling, then don’t worry, as the nearby public transport connections, including frequent buses, add even more ease for exploring the local area without a vehicle.
A Great Choice For Children, Cyclists, And Pets
As a whole, the Abbey Wood Club site is an undoubtedly remarkable choice for families. It’s a secure, safe, and pleasant environment. More to that, the campsite is pet-friendly, featuring dedicated areas for walking your dog. As I noted earlier, for those of you who like to cycle, the site – and Abbey Wood in its entirety – is awesomely accessible and easy-going for cyclists, with plenty of infrastructure to safely ride around the outskirts of London.
Now, I do understand that the whole caravanning thing isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, and for those of you who fancy a slightly different experience, the Abbey Wood Caravan and Motorhome Club site offers superb Ensuite Glamping Pods. It’s perfect for unwinding after a day in London, and you’re able to enjoy all that countryside greenery, as well as not having to compromise on modern creature comforts. These pet-free Glamping Pods come equipped with a double sofa bed, a bunk bed, a kitchenette, a TV/DVD combo, Bluetooth speakers, and even a wardrobe. Step outside, and you’ll find a private decking area with a table, chairs, a parasol, and a brick BBQ station.
It’s a great and slightly more luxurious way to enjoy camping, and basking in the beauty of nature around you. Or, if you are after something a bit closer to the camping experience, the Abbey Wood Club site has a selection of Camping Pods. These are a simpler, more eco-friendly option that feature a double futon, two chairs, electric sockets, lighting, and heating. Just like my wife and I’s trusty VW campervan, you could still find shared facilities located nearby, with all the upsides that I’ve enjoyed thus far. These Camping Pods are the ideal choice for those of you who want to relish in the pleasures of camping, but with a little extra comfort.
Our Verdict
All in all, the Abbey Wood Caravan and Motorhome Club site meets all the high standards that we have come to expect from the Caravan and Motorhome Club. Every step of the way, from the booking and check-in process to the on-site facilities, quick access to London and key public transportation hubs, as well as the friendly, peaceful atmosphere, makes it an outstanding choice for caravanners and campers. It’s an unbeatable pick for anyone if you want to go sightseeing and shopping in London, while then leaving behind all that congestion to return to a lush, comforting backdrop of the British countryside, whether you’re caravanning or camping.
This gets an easy thumbs up from me, and I’d highly recommend it to anyone here seeking a serene, stress-free camping experience. So, if you want to learn more and maybe book your stay there too, you could take a closer peek at the Abbey Wood Caravan and Motorhome Club site. While you’re there, be sure to check out the many other campsites that you could book besides too, as there is a endless selection offered by the Caravan and Motorhome Club throughout the length and breadth of the UK. And, hey, if London isn’t your thing, then keep searching, as there’s way more out there, just waiting to be explored.
