Do Front Wheel Drive Grip Control Systems Really Work?

I got the opportunity to test the front wheel drive Peugeot 2008 off-road recently and I was keen to see if they can actually work well when things get slippy.

Peugeot Grip Control System

I was doubtful at first; a front wheel drive car that works well off-road? How wrong could I have been? The 2008 has a grip control system with 5 different settings: normal, snow, off-road, sand, and ESP off. You can see below how the car worked when tested on very muddy ground and through deep sand.

I spent around 30 minutes driving around various bits of the course and although you could make the car slide around a little, it still kept moving and didn’t get stuck. So yes, it looks like FWD off-roading does work with a bit of clever trickery.

  • Watched the video, curious about the peugeot 2008 traction claim. Must say inconclusive. The capable ones usually leave you in no doubt. This one, non the wiser.

I only had a Peugoet 2008 for a week when we had snow. I tried the grip control on a steep incline and was amazed. It was like having four wheel drive.
So no, it is not a gimmick
