Hyundai’s INITIUM Concept Teases Hydrogen & New Design Ethos

Even though the prospect of hydrogen propulsion remains on somewhat shaky ground, that’s not going to stop carmakers from testing the waters. FCEVs, or ‘fuel cell electric vehicles’, are few and far between, but of all the brands today that have the most experience with this kind of technology, Hyundai’s been at it for over 27 years! In celebration of its pioneering hydrogen research – and it’s an opportune time to show off its new design language – they have since unveiled the INITIUM concept. Better yet, while it might just be a fancy drawing for now, they do plan on putting this into production, set for a proper reveal in the first half of 2025.

The INITIUM concept is planned to be Hyundai’s next-generation hydrogen-powered SUV, with a theoretical driving range of around 650km. Additionally, with a claimed maximum output of 150kW, it ought to be a modestly capable do-everything SUV. Details are a little light for now, but according to Hyundai, they aim to pair the production-spec INITIUM with its next-gen fuel cell stack technology. Between that, as well as an improved battery system, and a set of huge hydrogen fuel tanks, you’re able to enjoy the holy trinity of… Maximal driving range, no need for refuelling constantly, decent day-to-day performance, and a smooth driving experience.

The Art Of Steel – A Bold New Face For Hyundai

Besides all that clever hydrogen stuff, though, the INITIUM concept is more than a rolling test bed for Hyundai, as it’s also a great way to show off what future Hyundais might look like. So-called the ‘Art of Steel’, you may see more of this futuristic design language in future Hyundai models. In particular, did you know that Hyundai has its own hydrogen-focused sub-brand – HTWO? Just like HTWO’s logo, you might’ve noticed a lot of ‘+’ symbols on the INITIUM, most prominently that lighting signature, neatly integrating into the bumpers. I’m also a big fan of this retro-futuristic, 1980s-inspired silhouette, with its squared-off edges and hard corners.

Naturally, there’s an abundance of function amidst all this form that Hyundai’s flaunting with the INITIUM. The wheels, for example, are a huge set of 21-inch aero-disc turbine wheels, and it’s wrapped with low-rolling resistance tyres. Altogether, they should help with your range, too. On top of that, quite literally, are some rugged – yet practical – roof racks, clearly showing its hardy and adventure-seeking personality. To my eyes, it does look like it’d be a half-decent off-roader, but it’s too early to tell just yet. Based on Hyundai’s many claims, though, it feels as though it’s made for urban dwellers and modern city living, which seems to fit in quite well.

Could Hydrogen Propulsion Really Be The Future?

Peel back all that lovely steelwork, and the INITIUM is Hyundai’s strongest attempt thus far to push hydrogen power to the masses. To make this transition as seamless as possible, they paid a lot of attention to the INITIUM concept’s ease of use. With its long-range, that ought to help settle range anxiety for most, even if the infrastructure might not be there, just yet! They even designed a hydrogen-specific route planner into the satnav, as well. This way, you could get real-time data on nearby charging stations, their respective operating status and waiting times, as well as available refuelling spots. This ought to remove some of the guesswork.

Moreover, Hyundai aims to remove any doubt that hydrogen fuel cells are superbly safe. The INITIUM concept features a multi-skeleton structure for robust crash protection, as well as advanced side body impact reinforcements to absorb a lot of the impact. Step inside, and you will find a spacious and family-focused cabin, fit with large rear doors and ample legroom for your passengers in the back. The voluminous boot in the back should accommodate quite a number of weekend bags, too. Additionally, with V2L (vehicle-to-load) capability, this all-new Hyundai INITIUM could be one of the more exciting reveals to come out next year!
