2019 Subaru Impreza 2.0i SE Lineartronic Review

2019 Subaru Impreza 2.0i SE Lineartronic Review

The 2019 Subaru Impreza 2.0i SE Lineartronic adds to the brand’s reputation as a reliable car choice in the UK. Here are our thoughts on the new model.

What is the 2019 Subaru Impreza 2.0i SE Lineartronic about?

The 2019 Subaru Impreza is another vehicle that is specifically aimed at changing the image of Subaru from rally icon to a comprehensive player in the motor industry. The Subaru Impreza pairs reliability and off-road capability, all in a very reasonably priced package. It comes equipped with a CVT as the only transmission option here, but it works really well.

The 2019 Subaru Impreza sits in an interesting place when price vs features are considered. It is a little costlier than most FWD hatchbacks out there but is the only one in this segment that offers four-wheel drive. The Subaru Impreza 2.0i SE Lineartronic is targeted at those who want an everyday runabout that is also capable of handling off-road situations and can tow significant loads aswell.

Starting with the looks: the 2019 Subaru Impreza has none of the brutalism associated with previous models and instead features a conservative style. Don’t get me wrong… When I say conservative, I mean by Subaru standards!

It is still quite striking to look at but in an elegant manner. There are none of the vents and wings associated with the Subaru WRX. Instead, the car continues the trend of easy-flowing contours that give the Subaru Impreza a real sense of purpose. The narrow tail lamps, however, distort the proportions a bit and the back of the vehicle looks shrunken in comparison to the rest of it. But it is all a matter of opinion.

The 2.0-litre engine is the deciding factor between the 2019 Subaru Impreza and other hatchbacks. On paper, it looks decent and while the CVT gearbox could put off the petrol heads, Subaru claims to have used it in a manner that does not inhibit the driving experience. There was only one way to verify this claim and it was to take the car on a test drive.

How does it drive?

This model was a mixed bag right from the start. The 4-wheel drive is a delight in a hatchback and the Lineartronic CVT is one of the best around. I’m sure some will say that it can never replace the feel of a manual gearbox, but that’s not the point, it makes the car a lot more liveable. When driving the 2019 Subaru Impreza, you can see it is designed for convenience rather than focused driving pleasure.

Once its objectives became clear, the 2019 Subaru Impreza 2.0i really began to impress. The Lineartronic is the best CVT on the market right now. There are no random growls or screeches from sudden spikes in revs that you would associate with CVT gearboxes. It operates well of its own accord, making the most economical choices without affecting the car’s driveability.

The 2.0-litre engine has enough punch in the low and mid-range but starts to make more noise at higher revs. As far as the four-wheel drive goes, it is quite impressive. Driving this car in off-road conditions would be no problem at all, as long as you have the ground clearance you need. The 4-wheel drive keeps you planted with plenty of feedback and grip at all times.

The comfort levels are great as well. The suspension is just soft enough without being spongy.

The engine is quite refined and combined with the Lineartronic transmission, it can accelerate from 0-62 mph in just 9.8 seconds, which is commendable for a car with a CVT gearbox. A combined fuel economy of 42.8 mpg and CO2 emissions of 152 g/km further sweetens the deal.

What is it like inside?

The inside of the 2019 Subaru Impreza is a great advancement on previous versions. This model now feels up to date and is on a par with most other hatchbacks on sale right now.

The quality of materials used in the interior is quite high. The seats are comfortable and everything feels nice to the touch.

The instrument cluster has undergone a major revamp. All important information is easily accessible. The controls are ergonomically spaced and everything looks cool and in tune with the times.

The experience

The 2019 Subaru Impreza was a surprise package. Subaru is clearly working on changing their stereotypical image and this definitely is a big step in that direction. Based on the Impreza 2.0i, I would say that they are on the right track. This car is a very practical option at a great price.

2019 Subaru Impreza 2.0i SE Lineartronic Cost

The 2019 Subaru Impreza 2.0i SE Lineartronic starts at £25,010 and it comes with many added safety features. It does lack an inbuilt navigation system but supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Overall, the 2019 Subaru Impreza 2.0i SE Lineartronic is a great everyday option.

Verdict

The 2019 Subaru Impreza 2.0i  is a practical hatchback with off-road capabilities. It isn’t the most exciting hatchback out there but it is one of the safest and most sure-footed. It is perfect for those looking for a hassle-free practical car for daily use, without having to break the bank or make any major compromises.
