Polestar has ascended with great speed in recent years. From being the performance arm of Volvo, it spun off into its own company. Since then, this upstart brand has launched two new cars, the aptly named Polestar 1, and 2. Now, it looks like a third sibling is about to be born into the Polestar family. But unlike the first two, this time it’s going to be made in the land of the free.
For a bit of background, the Polestar 3 will be a sporty, aerodynamic, and performance-focused electric SUV, coming in 2022. It will be born in Volvo’s manufacturing plant in Ridgeville, South Carolina. There, the 3 will be put together alongside other Volvo-branded vehicles. Plus, it will be made for sale in the USA, as well as in other markets.
This has turned Polestar into a very global brand, with production facilities in China and the USA, as well as its massive complexes in Europe. Speaking a bit more on this, Thomas Ingenlath, the CEO of Polestar, said:
I remember the great response when I first shared Polestar’s vision here in the USA and I am proud that our first SUV will be manufactured in South Carolina. From now on, the USA is no longer an export market but a home market.
From Strength To Strength
Polestar will also be making a lot of retail moves into the US market, as well. We should see 25 retail spaces – or fancy showrooms, in other words – be opened across the country. Here, customers can have test drives, free pick-up and delivery servicing, and a mobile service for those markets and regions that don’t yet have Polestar’s ‘Spaces’.
The Polestar 3 will show off a brand-new generation of EVs to arrive from Volvo and Polestar. Its entire architectures are designed and built from scratch to best fit electrification. We’ll also be seeing Google’s Android Automotive infotainment make its way into the Polestar 3 for the first time, and a huge array of safety tech and autonomous driving systems.
There’s a lot more at stake to bringing the 3’s production to the USA, as Dennis Nobelius, the COO of Polestar, makes clear:
Production in the USA reduces delivery times as well as the environmental impact associated with shipping vehicles around the world. It will even have a positive impact on the price of Polestar 3. All of this makes the brand even more competitive in the critical American sales market.
