Honestly, it feels like Mercedes has been cranking out umpteen different special edition models as of late, which has been a bit hard to keep track of. AMG, in particular, hasn’t been shy when it comes to flexing its motorsports heritage and putting all those learnings and experience in its road cars. The latest in a long line of special edition models is the new Mercedes-AMG GT 63 PRO 4MATIC+ “Motorsport Collector’s Edition”. It’s quite a mouthful, so I’m just going to call it the Motorsport Collector’s Edition, for short. What I do like about it, though, is that it’s a good sort of limited edition collectable car that’s actually unique, not just a mere coat of paint.
For example, the Motorsport Collector’s Edition is fitted with AMG’s ceramic high-performance composite brakes. These feature 6-piston fixed callipers at the front as well as 1-piston floating callipers at the rear. So, if you’re serious about track days in your new GT 63 PRO 4MATIC+, the brake upgrades here ought to help quite a bit. Plus, the front axle of your big Merc has massive 420mm brake discs, engineered to stop you on a dime. Moreover, Mercedes-AMG has bundled in a set of sticky Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2R tyres as standard, in sizes 295/30 ZR 21 (front) and 305/30 ZR 21 (rear) for optimal grip and handling. So, what else have they done besides?
Enough Performance To Tear Up Your Local Track
Aside from some track-spec tyres and brakes, another noteworthy upgrade to the regular AMG GT 63 PRO 4MATIC+ for the Motorsports Collector’s Edition is the addition of carbon fibre. And there’s no shortage of carbon here, which encompasses the front splitter, side sill trim, and rear wing. These don’t just look fetching, but they ought to improve your aero too, especially if you consider the AMG Aerodynamics Package that gets bundled into this edition, as well. That package gets you some additional aerodynamics tuning, helping to reduce lift and improve the car’s cooling. Meanwhile, for more aesthetics, you also then get the AMG Night Package II.
The latter adds quite a bit of black chrome exterior trim, giving it that aggressive, sporty look. If you look under the hood of the Motorsport Collector’s Edition GT 63 PRO 4MATIC+, there’s not a huge amount of difference from the regular car. You still have the same old 4.0-litre biturbo V8 engine, good for 612hp. No change there, but between the upgrades in cooling and aero, that might be enough to wring out just a tiny bit more performance and high-speed stability. If you are serious about taking this out on track days, the included AMG TRACK PACE package might be worth using, too. This should offer extra telemetry and analysis to help hone your skills.
Could This New AMG Be A Future Cult Classic Car?
With a production limit of just 200 units, this Mercedes-AMG GT 63 PRO 4MATIC+ Motorsport Collector’s Edition is aimed at enthusiasts, collectors, and AMG fans alike. In particular, it’s for folks with a passion for Formula 1, given the special Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team livery and PETRONAS-coloured accents throughout the exterior. For more special-ness, the base car, painted in obsidian black metallic paint, adorns hand-painted silver Mercedes stars on the rear flanks and PETRONAS-coloured decorative stripes extending from the front fenders to the roof. Aside from that, you can see loads more of that PETRONAS bright green accent elsewhere.
Even the 21-inch forged wheels, finished in matte black, feature contrasting green accents. Its interior is equally a nice place to spend time in, with PETRONAS stitching on those AMG bucket seats, in addition to more carbon fibre trim in here, too. Of course, for a special edition car like this, you can expect to find all the bells and whistles that the regular AMG GT 63 PRO 4MATIC+ could be spec’d with. That includes the 15-speaker Burmester sound system, heads-up display, 360-degree camera, and even a front-axle lift system. Oh, and I can’t forget the “1 out of 200” edition badge and custom AMG car cover. Probably worth the premium just for that, eh?
