When Mercedes-AMG first unveiled the all-new and fully redesigned AMG GT family, we knew that it was bound for the track at some point. While we don’t yet have an extreme and insane Black Series model of this new AMG GT, we’re slowly getting there, more so with the unveiling of the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 PRO 4MATIC+. The name is a bit of a mouthful, but I’d imagine it won’t slouch around when you take it to the track. It’s sharper and more dynamic than before, with more power under the hood compared to the standard GT 63, in addition to far improved aero and better cooling to handle those lengthy track days. So, is it worth the extra cash?
Well, if you’re proactive with going to the track, it might just be worth it. For starters, the new GT 63 PRO 4MATIC+ boasts around 27hp more than the normal GT 63, although it comes from the same, legendary 4.0-litre biturbo V8 engine. Its total output has since been raised to a very impressive 612hp, with a whopping 850Nm of torque. AMG’s dark magic has resulted in plenty of fine-tuning elsewhere, and with the aid of a slick-shifting AMG SPEEDSHIFT transmission, it manages a 0-100km/h sprint in a speedy 3.2 seconds. More eye-watering still, the GT 63 PRO 4MATIC+ accelerates from 0 to 200km/h in just 10.9 seconds, before topping out at 317km/h.
Speed Is More Than Meets The Eye
As you can imagine, there’s more to performance than just adding a bunch of power to make your sports car go fast. Among the many changes that Mercedes-AMG has made to the GT 63 to give it that athletic edge is optimising its aerodynamics. As such, the GT 63 PRO 4MATIC+ is fitted with standalone body components to help reduce aerodynamic lift. This is courtesy of a redesigned front apron, active aero bits and pieces in the underbody, and a fixed rear wing to give it much-needed downforce. Elsewhere, you might also notice the new air deflectors and revised brake cover plates on the GT 63 PRO, further smoothening airflow around the car.
Crucially, anyone who goes to a lot of track days knows that cooling is just as important as any amount of power that you’d tack onto your car. In so doing, the AMG GT 63 PRO 4MATIC+ has an expanded cooler package, namely the extra air inlets, and it also has active cooling just for the drivetrain. You’ll even find two whole radiators positioned in the front wheel arches, which altogether, ought to keep the GT 63 PRO from overheating, even under far increased load than before. Oh, and those redesigned brake cover plates further help to prevent high brake temps when you’re driving hard on track. And, we haven’t even mentioned the motorsports bits!
Motorsports Tech On A Daily Driver
If you spec the AMG Exterior Carbon Fibre, you can get a tonne of fancy carbon trim, which is no doubt effective at weight reduction, aside from looking good. If the fixed rear wing wasn’t enough to convince you of the GT 63 PRO 4MATIC+’s sportiness, then look no further than its massive ceramic composite brakes, guaranteed to offer enhanced durability and a lot greater resistance to fading under heavy braking. Plus, those gargantuan 21-inch forged, lightweight wheels don’t just look nice, but they’re wrapped with super-sticky Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2R Cup tyres, made for maximal traction in the wet and dry, and munching through bitumen.
As its (lengthy) name suggests, the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 PRO 4MATIC+ features AMG’s fully-variable 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive system, with enhanced grip while you’re out on track, and I reckon it’ll make for a perfect all-weather car, too. That is then matched with AMG’s ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL suspension, including onboard active-roll stabilisation and rear-axle steering, altogether helping to sharpen the GT 63 PRO 4MATIC+’s handling and driving feel. It’s pretty astounding to consider that all this performance is wrapped up in a luxurious, grand touring package, so once you’re done on the track, you can drive back home in supreme comfort.
