The renowned Continental GT, a flagship Bentley model, has marked its two-decade run in style. For those unaware, Bentley has crafted a one-off 2023 Continental GT Speed, a tribute to the inaugural 2003 production model. And guess what? It’s already found a home with a collector from across the pond!
A Nod to the Original
The 2023 edition was displayed right next to the first-ever GT that rolled off the Crewe production line, VIN20001, during The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering – an event that, like the Continental GT, is celebrating its 20th anniversary.
For the design aficionados, this new model is drenched in nostalgia. The original Cypress Green paintwork, plush Saddle leather upholstery, and classic Burr Walnut veneer interior – all these elements of the 2003 model have been lovingly mirrored in the 2023 Speed.
But it’s not all about looking to the past. The new model flaunts enhancements, such as a ‘Special Green’ accent hide, detailed contrast stitching, and two veneer finishes that bridge the exterior and interior through a painted Cypress pinstripe.
Decked Out and Sold Out
Among the car’s many features, you’ll find the Blackline, Touring, and Styling Specifications. These additions offer a polished black exterior, technical enhancements, and even a carbon fibre front splitter, side skirts, and a boot lip spoiler.
Inside, the car is fitted with a Bentley Rotating Display and an audio system from Naim for Bentley. And just to stamp its mark, the personalised treadplates declare, ’20 years of the Continental GT by Bentley Mulliner’.
A Legacy Spanning Three Generations
When the first Continental GT hit the roads in 2003, it not only reshaped Bentley’s image but also birthed a new niche in the market.
With its sleek design echoing the 1952 R Type Continental and a powerhouse 6.0-litre twin-turbo engine under its hood, the Continental GT set new standards. Throughout its first-generation production, it expanded its lineage with models like the GT Convertible and GT Speed.
By 2010, a second-generation was introduced, which debuted a sprightly 4.0-litre V8 engine. This model line-up saw a limited edition 710PS Supersports join the ranks in 2017. 2018 heralded the dawn of the third generation. Every inch reimagined, the new GT boasted of sharper lines, a revamped W12 engine, and cutting-edge on-board technology.
The Continental Journey
As part of the celebrations, a special Bentley ‘baton’, reflecting the Continental GT’s key designs, embarked on a global odyssey. This baton is set to traverse through the Middle East, Europe, China, Asia Pacific, and the US, all while ensconced in various Continental GT models.
This globe-trotting relay will eventually return to Bentley’s Dream Factory in Crewe. The finale? The baton, carrying 20 tokens from its journey, will stand as a timeless capsule, reminiscing about its unparalleled adventure.
So, here’s to the Continental GT, a true embodiment of luxury and performance, and a journey that’s spanned two memorable decades. Cheers to many more miles ahead!
