What Are Range Rovers
Now before we start discussing the topic of are Range Rovers reliable and look a little bit at their problems. Let’s first introduce ourselves to the topic and learn more about the history of Range Rover. How the Range Rover was created in the first place?
Well, as you probably know, the Range Rover is a nameplate given to Land Rover vehicles. These vehicles are basically produced in the same factories as standard Land Rover models. But how they are different?
Well, this was born as an idea in 1951 by the Rover company that owned Land Rover. And they started a small project to create a Road Rover. Which in fact was a bigger model than the Land Rover with the idea to become a proper cruising vehicle. But they shelved this idea in 1958.
And this idea was shelved till Land Rover engineers started to work on it again in 1966 and created the first prototype.
Soon after the first prototype was introduced, in 1969, the first Range Rover model was released on the market.
And this model was not your standard Land Rover. But a bigger vehicle that looked like no Land Rover looked before. And this created the legend of the Range Rover.
The first-generation model was still a very capable off-roader. Even though it was created mainly for the roads. People just loved it a lot and as of today, there are over five generations released of this legendary model. But are Range Rovers reliable?
More on that we are going to cover in a bit after we discuss something a bit more on the popularity of this model and why it is the number one option for a lot of people nowadays.
Why Are Range Rovers So Popular
Now let’s cover another interesting topic before we dive into learning if are Range Rovers reliable. And that is the popularity of this model. What makes this model so demanded and very popular in the audience?
Well, over the long years of production, the Range Rover has become a true status symbol. This model has become known as a personal luxury vehicle and ditched the utilitarianism and the ruggedness for something more refined.
Since the second generation, Land Rover more precisely BMW which owned the Rover group at the time, decided to make this model a true status symbol.
And frankly, this worked quite well. There were a lot of people wanting to get an SUV but they were discouraged by the fact that these vehicles are purely utilitarian and do not have anything luxurious in them.
So, BMW decided to add more features and also improve the look of the model to make it more appealing to rich people.
And nowadays after all these long years, the model has become a true status symbol that a lot of people with serious money want to have. Even though the reliability is quite questionable. But are Range Rovers reliable?
Well, more on that we are going to cover in a bit. Once we introduce ourselves to the generations of the Range Rover and understand a bit more about their specs. So, you definitely don’t want to miss that.
Range Rover Generations
Now let’s take a look at the Range Rover generations before we start discussing the topic of are Range Rovers reliable. In the following chapters, we are going to cover the last three generations and cover a bit more about them.
We will focus on vehicles that are newer since there is a higher chance that you will come across one of these models and buy them. The third generation was that time when Range Rover hit the mainstream and was sold in big numbers. So, buckle up because it is going to be a long ride.
Third Generation Range Rover 2001 – 2012
So, let’s start with the third generation, shall we? The third generation of the Range Rover was known under the codename L322. This generation was introduced in 2001 and was based on the chassis that the BMW E38 was based on. As you probably know, Land Rover was owned by BMW at the time. So, this is quite understandable.
This model in terms of technologies has three separate generations. Strange but true. This was the case because BMW sold the stake of Land Rover in 2005 and stepped out of the game since they were not interested in this brand anymore.
This model is probably the most diverse of any model out there. From 2001 to 2004 it carries the electrical system of the BMW E39. Then from 2005 to 2009, it has an upgraded electronics system with Jaguar components. And from 2010 to 2012 it has completely Jaguar-produced electronics.
This model had two design revisions, the first in 2006 and the second in 2010. The second revision was the most noticeable and implemented a lot of modern technologies, making the Range Rover a proper modern SUV.
Nevertheless, in terms of dimensions, the model has a 113.4 inches wheelbase and an overall length of 194.9 inches in 2005 and 195.7 since 2006. But are Range Rovers Reliable? More on that in a bit.
Engines & Transmissions
The first generation, from 2001 to 2005, came with the BMW 4.4L V8 and ZF 5HP-24 transmission, the second generation from 2006 to 2009 with a 4.4L V8 engine from Jaguar with a 6-speed ZF transmission, and the third generation from 2010 to 2012 with the newly developed 5.0L Supercharged Jaguar V8 and 8-speed ZF transmission. But are Range Rovers reliable? More on that we are going to cover later on.
The fuel economy of this model is rather poor. The 4.4L BMW from 2005 only got 11 mpg in the city, 15 mpg on the highway, and 12 mpg combined.
For the updated model from 2011, the numbers changed. This model got 12 mpg in the city, 17 mpg on the highway, and 14 mpg combined. Still quite poor though. But it is expected since it is a rather large vehicle. But are Range Rovers reliable? More on that in a bit.
When it comes to the safety aspect, we couldn’t find a lot of data on this topic. The information is pretty scarce. But overall, this model is rather large and implements a ton of safety systems like airbags, ABS brakes, and other equipment for that era.
Range Rovers Problems
When it comes to problems, this model is probably one of the most problematic vehicles ever sold. It has a ton of issues and you need to be aware of them.
Namely, the 4.4L engine is very prone to blowing head gaskets and the chances are rather slim that one of these engines did not overheat during its life. The cooling system on these is from BMW and is quite poor. So, this engine is a very big problem to own.
Also, the timing chain is prone to failure on these 4.4L engines as well. Overall, one of the most problematic engines that you can buy. Especially till 2005.
Another problem is the automatic transmission, more precisely the 5-speed auto. This transmission is prone to failure.
Electrical problems also are quite common and can happen very often. The alternator is a key weak spot and can fail frequently.
Also, there are a ton of issues with the air suspension. With these Range Rovers, you cannot be surprised if you find the flat on the ground or sagging on one end. And these are really expensive repairs.
Other problems can include the ignition switch, fuel pump problems, and frequent rattles from the suspension. But are Range Rovers reliable? More on that in a moment.
Are Range Rovers Reliable
But are Range Rovers reliable? Well, when it comes to this model specifically, the L322 we can say that it is really unreliable and has a ton of issues.
If you can purchase one with a bumper-to-bumper warranty it will be the best thing because if something happens you will be covered. Now let’s move to the next generation.
Fourth Generation Range Rover 2012 – 2021
Now let’s move to something more modern. And this is the fourth generation of the Range Rover. The fourth generation of the model was introduced in 2012 and was in production till 2021. So, we can say that this model is rather recent.
What is interesting to know about this model is that it was built by Jaguar and is not a Frankenstein model like the previous generation. This model is a genuine Jaguar Land Rover product.
Nevertheless, this generation was a huge improvement in both technology, as well as in looks in comparison to the previous generation.
This model had a longer wheelbase of 115 inches and an overall length of 204.7 inches for the long wheelbase model. The curb weight of this model was between 4.762 and 5,203lbs. But are Range Rovers reliable? More on that in a bit.
Engines & Transmissions
In terms of transmissions, there was only one. And that was the ZF 8HP. This was an 8-speed torque converter automatic. But are Range Rovers reliable? More on that in a bit.
The fuel economy stayed the same with this model as with the previous generation with the 5.0L engine. It delivered 12 mpg in the city, 17 mpg on the highway, and overall 14 mpg combined.
But the 2.0L engine was rather good in this aspect. This model was getting 22 mpg in the city, 28 mpg on the highway, and 24 mpg combined. So, if you want to go for good fuel economy, this would be it.
The 3.0L is also quite decent, with 18 mpg in the city, 24 mpg on the highway, and 20 mpg combined. But are Range Rovers reliable? More on that in a bit.
When it comes to safety, it is worth mentioning that this model was rather good. There is some data on the model. More specifically from the Euro NCAP tests done in Europe. The model performed really well and got a 5-stars overall rating. But are Range Rovers reliable? More on this in a bit.
Range Rover Problems
When it comes to common problems, this model is much better than the previous generation that we just covered.
Still, the model has a fair share of issues that can be somewhat annoying and will require some money to be fixed. Luckily, no serious engine and transmission problems this time around.
Still, the brakes tend to wear rapidly on these vehicles quite frequently because they are rather heavy cars. Another problem is the door latches that are prone to failure and will require replacing if they brake.
Also, there were a ton of recalls during the years that required the vehicle to go to the shop. Mainly for software updates. So, if you want to purchase a used Range Rover, we would recommend you check if all the recalls have been done to the vehicle and if they are not, you should do them in order to be safe. But are Range Rovers reliable? More on that next.
Are Range Rovers Reliable
So, are Range Rovers reliable from the fourth generation? Well, we would say, yes. They are fairly reliable models that you should definitely check out.
Our recommendation is to check the 3.0L engine. These engines are probably the best all-around options when it comes to performance and fuel economy. The 2.0L might be a hybrid but still, there is no replacement for displacement. Now let’s move on to the next generation.
Fifth Generation Range Rover 2022 – Present
Now let’s move on to the fifth generation Range Rover, which in fact is the last generation that was released. This model is a thorough fresh as 2022 is the first model year.
This new Range Rover is screaming luxury, being probably one of the most luxurious models on the market right now and king of the luxury SUV segment.
Nevertheless, this model was also developed by Jaguar Land Rover as the previous model and is built on the MLA Flex platform which is specifically designed for all-electric and plug-in hybrids. This means that in the near future, we can expect a completely electric Range Rover.
When it comes to size, this is probably the biggest Range Rover ever built. With 118 inches for the standard and 125.9 inches for the long wheelbase. And an overall length of 198 inches for the standard and 205.8 inches for the long base. But are Range Rovers reliable? More on this, we are going to cover it in a bit.
Engines & Transmissions
This model comes with two different gas-powered engines but a number of different configurations. These include mild hybrids, plug-in hybrids, as well as standard gasoline variants. For those hybrid versions, there is a 141hp electric motor. And for the plug-in hybrid, there is a 38.2kWh battery.
There are two gasoline engines as we mentioned, a 3.0L turbocharged engine. And a 4.4L twin-turbo V8. The V8 engine is borrowed by BMW. As you probably know, they are using it in their M5 model. The power ratings really depend on the configuration but it ranges from 355hp to 523hp.
In terms of transmissions, there is only one offered. And that is the 8-speed automatic by ZF. But are Range Rovers reliable? More on that in a bit.
The fuel economy of the new model is rather good. It gets about 18 mpg in the city, 26 mpg on the highway, and 21 mpg combined.
The plug-in hybrid is reportedly the best when the gas-powered engine and the electric motor work together. This model reportedly can squeeze 42 mpg. But are Range Rovers reliable? More on this in a moment.
When it comes to the safety of this new model. We couldn’t find any reports on tests since this model is still brand new.
But we know that is packing a lot of technology when it comes to safety. And considering that it is probably one of the biggest Range Rovers ever put into production, we can assume that is a rather structurally strong vehicle. But are Range Rovers reliable? More on this in a bit.
Range Rover Problems
When it comes to problems, there is only one issue reported on the newest generation model. And this issue is a malfunctioning crash sensor for the airbags.
These vehicles produced before the month of May 2022 were recalled in order for the sensor to be replaced. But are Range Rovers reliable? Let’s see next.
Are Range Rovers Reliable
When it comes to this model, we can say that it is still new and unproven on the road. All these vehicles produced are currently low-mile cars.
Issues usually start to arise during the second production year when the cars start to add up mileage. But as we all know, Range Rover is slightly less reliable than other makes. So, this is kinda expected.
In this article, we have covered quite a bit when it comes to the Range Rover. First, we learned what this model is all about and why it is so popular among buyers.
Then we moved on and covered the last three generations of this legendary vehicle. We learned their specs, common problems, as well as if are Range Rovers reliable.
